Max. Adult Length: 3.1m (Typically 2.4 – 2.8m)

A robust dolphin with a distinctively tall and very falcate dorsal fin and short thick beak. The body is mid to dark grey but with diffuse grey-white colouration on the head and flanks and a grey-white “saddle” behind the dorsal fin. Generally seen on the continental shelf but offshore, they are seen in coastal waters particularly when food is present. This species is only found in the cool waters of the North Atlantic so UK sightings are mostly limited to the North Sea and northern Scotland.

Key Areas: North Sea coast of northern England and Scotland and around Orkney and Shetland.
